CO2 Laser Surgery

Your pet's health is as important to us as it is to you. We are pleased offer CO2 laser surgery for the most comfortable care of your pet. In our surgical procedures our CO2 laser often replaces the scalpel blade and provides a better alternative to traditional surgery in many cases.

What is a laser?

A laser is a device that generates an intense beam of light at a specific wavelength.

Are lasers new?

No. Medical lasers have been proven to work for more than 25 years. Computer technology has made laser use possible in veterinary medicine. We were pleased to be among the first veterinary practices in Eastern Canada to utilize CO2 laser surgery specifically developed for animals starting in January 2004.

What procedures can a laser perform?

Laser is ideal for a wide variety of surgical procedures. We are using CO2  laser surgery for many of the surgeries we perform. We use it for elective surgeries and for oral, ophthalmic, orthopedic, urogenital and abdominal surgery.

  • Skin Surgery
  • Feline Laser Declaw – after extensive consultation with the owner, and consideration of the cat’s specific quality of life before and post surgery
  • Elective Surgeries – Ovariohysterectomies, Orchidectomies
  • Oral Surgery
  • Ophthalmic Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Urogenital Surgery
  • Abdominal Surgery

How does a laser work?

Our patients are treated with a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, the most widely used type of medical laser in the world.  CO2 Lasers use energy applied to a sealed canister of CO2 gas, emitting a specific wavelength of invisible light energy that incises/vaporizes the tissues – with minimal damage to the tissues.Because the laser beam can be precisely controlled, it removes or cuts only a thin layer of tissue at one time, leaving the surrounding areas unaffected. This level of control allows us to be extremely precise in every laser surgery, and results in minimal amounts of tissue damage.

Why laser surgery?

  • Less Pain - The laser seals nerve endings as it ²cuts,² so your pet will have reduced pain after the surgery.
  • Less bleeding - The laser seals small blood vessels during surgery.
  • Less swelling - Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise because there is no physical contact with the tissue. That means less pain!

What does this mean for my pet?

  • Less pain - Patients are far more comfortable after laser surgery!
Reduced risk of infection - The laser sterilizes as it removes diseased tissue, killing bacteria that cause infection.
  • Precision - The laser can remove unhealthy tissue without affecting or removing surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Quick return to normal activities - Healing is rapid and there is less post-operative discomfort.

Missy

Missy, a geriatric Boxer had two growths removed, from here head and tail, while wide awake. All she was given was a light sedative and local anaesthesia - and she watched us as much as we were watching her! Her mom waited while this procedure was done and she went home very shortly after this procedure was completed.
